The Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater inside the National Air and Space Museum delivers an absolutely breathtaking cinematic experience that matches the grand scale of the museum itself. Featuring a massive five story screen and a state of the art dual 4K laser projection system, it transforms standard viewing into a deeply immersive journey through deep space and aviation history. The thunderous, crystal clear digital surround sound allows you to feel the roar of rocket engines vibrating right through your seat. It is the ultimate way to wrap up a museum visit, providing a gripping, larger than life educational experience that completely transports audiences of all ages.

I live near the Chantilly Air and Space Museum, and I always watch movies there. I received an email recently saying that this theater inside the Air and Space museum in DC has finished renovation and has show times for Formula 1, so I took that drive to check it out for the very first time. The new seats are so nice. I wish they had them in Chantilly because the Chantilly A&S IMAX chairs are outdated, with no cup holders. I'm afraid the projector was skewed and needs calibration. As soon as the trailers came, I noticed it was off. I was hoping it was only the trailers and not the movie, but unfortunately,y the movie was also skewed. Check pics. Not only was the projector skewed, but it was also shifted too far up. I always go to Chantilly A&S IMAX because they have adjusted perfectly. I don't even go to Tyson's IMAX. This isn't acceptable, and I won't be back until it's fixed. This is an easy adjustment and doesn't require any extra hardware or renovation. The image just needs to be properly aligned. In fact, I've emailed Smithsonian so they will assign someone to calibrate this. Another reason I have to think twice about coming back (other than the long drive to DC and parking) is not an easy fix. In fact, I don't think there will be a fix. The way the seats and screen are positioned, you have to be looking up from most of the rows. In Chantilly Airbus, you only have to look up if you're in the bottom half of the rows. Here in DC, at Lockheed IMAX, only the top two rows do not require you to look up. The way the seats and screens are aligned, you really have to be looking up the whole time, and it's not comfortable. What a shame, because I was really looking forward to them finishing the renovation. It is still better and cheaper than any regular IMAX theater. This is true. Also, sad that no popcorn was available when I went.

It was a super cool experience to watch Dune Part 1 here, but I think most of that was just due to it being my first experience with IMAX. The picture quality was stunning, and the sound is great too, but unbeknownst to me when I was getting tickets is that you will be craning your neck to look at the screen unless you’re in the very rear two rows of the theater. I was in the 4th row from the back and even that was only just far back enough for it not to be too uncomfortable. Doesn’t help that the seats done recline. Luckily they are still comfortable. The biggest negative here, though, is the bright blue lights showing where the stairs are that take over the bottom 1/4th of the screen. I feel like they either need to turn those off during the showing, or install some much dimmer lights there. It really shows up in dark scenes. Not sure if I’d see another movie here.

The screen is obviously huge and great quality but I can’t emphasize enough that if you go you need to sit as far back as possible. Anything before row G and you will be looking straight up. The seats are foldable with some cushion, so not very comfortable, but definitely bearable.

Caught and evening movie, Captain marvel, at the IMAX Air and space museum. The film experience was very cool but it was almost worth it just to see the Air and space museum empty at night. They have regular concessions and there is not a bad seat in the house. Very glad we took the time to see a movie there.
